The President is the highest office of the country and the salary of the President of India is Rs 5 Lakh per month which makes up to Rs 60 Lakh per annum. This salary excludes the benefits the President enjoys being in the highest position.
Ramnath Kovind, the President of India made some interesting comments on his salary and they are raking up a huge debate. On Sunday President Kovind visited Kanpur, his hometown and during a public gathering, Kovind talked about his salary.
“My salary is Rs 5 Lakh and in that Rs 3 Lakh gets deducted in the form of taxes. In that sense, I have little but I’m no better than the rest. A government school teacher saves more money than me,” said President Kovind.
These comments have stormed the internet. But the fact is, from the President to the Prime Minister to the CM or Governor, income tax is exempted for those who take office in government. Netizens are surprised that tax is getting deducted from the President’s salary and some have knowledge of the Pension Act 1951 which clearly states that there is no tax on the President’s salary.
Whatever it is on what context President Kovind made these comments, is something no one has any clue.
