Biopics are not new. And sports biopics have become trend with MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Mary Kom, Milkha Singh (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), Mahavir Singh Phogat (Dangal) and many more. After films like Jersey, Tollywood is also keenly looking at sports dramas and biographical films. And joining this bandwagon is Karnam Malleswari’s biopic.
Karnam Malleswari is a celebrated sports woman from Andhra. Her life has always been a roller coaster ride. Born near Amadalavalasa in Srikakulam district, she along with her four sisters was trained in weightlifting. Malleswari started at very early at 12. She went onto become a celebrated Indian heavy-weightlifter. She won world championship in 54-kg division in 1994, 1995 and secured third place in 1993 and 1996. She had won Bronze Medal at Olympics.
She had married fellow weightlifter Rajesh Tyagi in 1997 and in 2001 she gave birth to a son. She had planned to make comeback at 2002 Commonwealth Games, but withdrew due to her father’s death. She finally retired after failing to score at 2004 Olympics.
Now her life-story is being made on screen and it’s going to be produced by Kona Venkat and Vizag MP MVV Satyanarayana. The film will be directed by Sanjana Reddy whose debut Kittu Unnadu Jagratta with Raj Tarun had failed at the Box Office. Let’s wait and see, what is in store for this biopic.
