Streaming On : AHA
Bhama Kalapam is AHA’s new thriller which is available for streaming now. The film stars Priyamani in a lead role and is directed by Abhimanyu Tadimeti. The film is based on a murder mystery and has music by Justin Prabhakaran.
What’s it about?
A vintage and precious egg gets stolen from the Kolkatta museum and reaches Hyderabad. It lands in the hands of a chicken shop owner who is the neighbor of Anupama(Priyamani). Her only weakness is to poke into other lives. One fine day, she gets suspicious about her neighbor and goes to his house to find out what the issue is. But she gets embroiled in a murder case and things get haywire. She has to now escape the cops and also a gang who is after the egg. How does she come out is the basic plot.
Performances
Priyamani is a top performer and gets a meaty role to showcase what she is capable of. She as the desperate housewife breathes life in the character and is the sole reason for the film to look engaging. Sharanya Pradeep who plays the house help give good support to Priyamani with her sincere performance. John Vijay plays the main villain is funny in his role but does go overboard a bit in the second half. Noted actress, Shanti Rao plays the pregnant cop but is not that engaging in her character.
Technicalities
Justin Prabhakaran has composed the music and it is okay. There are a few scenes that needed a better score though. Deepak Yeragera’s cinematography is very good as the apartment setup is shown in an interesting tone. Viplav Nyshadam’s editing could have been a lot better especially in the second half. The dialogues and production design are effective and the film’s story is also okay.
Analysis
Bhama Kalapam has been given the tagline of a home-cooked thriller and stays true to its genre. The setup, casting, and the manner in which the suspense-filled story is unleashed into the narrative look good. The film mainly depends on the eccentric character of Priyamani and that is also established nicely by the director Abhimanyu.
The first half an hour of the film and how the character of Anupama gets embroiled in the murder mystery evokes interest for the audience. But the film goes down once the investigation starts. The entry of a pregnant cop looks interesting but the manner in which the cops investigate looks a bit dull and slow.
Upon this, the villain’s role looks a bit stretched. Though it looks a bit fun, the manner in which John Vijay goes overboard makes the scenes volatile. The loose ends in the thriller are connected well by the end and the manner in which the church father ends up with the egg is okay but is dragged a bit and it is predictable.
The scenes between Priyamani and the house help are funny and miss the mark. In such places, the drama needed to be gripping but is let off. If these small aspects would have been taken care of, the film would have been a gripping thriller but it falls somewhere between good and bad and makes for a timepass OTT watch.
Bottom Line – Half Boiled Egg
Rating: 2.5/5
