What Is It About?

Abhinaya Vasudev (Kiran Abbavaram) gets locked in a dark place and gets interrogated to reveal things from the past.

Vasudev is a postman in a small village called Krishnagiri and he falls in love with Satyabhama (Nayana Sarika). Many young women go missing in Krishnagiri and Vasudev has his own doubts. What is it to do with Vasudev? What did he find and why is he being interrogated? The answers to these questions are all about Ka.

Performances

Kiran Abbavaram did a decent job in the subtle character of Abhinaya Vasudev. Kiran did the action part well. Heroine Nayana Sarika looked beautiful and expressive. Tanvi Ram is fine in her role.

Achyuth Kumar, Redin Kingsley, Saranya Pradeep, and others did their part.

Technicalities

Ka stays apart for the concept it has. It is a supernatural thriller with a non-sequential narrative. The dots are connected in the end with a big revelation twist, but the confused wait till the end is hard. Ka has good camera work, production design, and a super supportive background score. The songs are soothing and get along with the story but there is not one catchy song, yet.

Analysis

Kiran Abbavaram made sure to promote Ka as a new concept film and a never-before-touched subject in Telugu cinema right from the beginning. True to that, Ka is definitely a movie with a unique concept with a fresh narrative. Having said that, there are slow portions, predictable elements and a mediocre pre-climax that are setbacks even with a terrific climax.

The movie Ka is like a puzzle that keeps the tangle intact until the climax. The unconventional beginning intrigues and the take off into the story with a non-linear narrative is also interesting. The routine setup of a strange village, the serial crime element, and of course the love track give the déjà vu feeling. The story keeps introducing new threads but answered questions remain the same.

The interval block is a surprise but add more doubts and questions to the big pile already. The second half too has some slow parts just like in the first half. The plot keeps unfolding in the second half but the mystic world is uncovered only in the end, which is really good.

The pre-climax is similar to that of many other thriller movies with a bit of over-the-top villainy. However, the impressive climax twist overshadows the ordinary pre-climax. Ka has got a good twist in the interval and of course the climax, but there are no big highs and thrilling moments elsewhere. For this complicated concept, the screenplay could have been better to keep the pace with the story within.

The narrative gets slow here and there, but the decent plot building and adequate execution balance it to a major extent. The lack of clarity prevails all along the story, but the plot is in such a way that the directors have no other option other than to tie all the loose ends only in the climax.

Overall, Ka has a unique concept taken forward with a decent narrative. The fresh concept and the way it was dealt with good technical support deserves appreciation.
