Sudheer Varma and Nikhil Siddhartha have worked on two films, Swamy Ra Ra and Keshava, in the past. They have joined hands for the third time with Appudo Ippudo Eppudo which also has Rukmini Vasanth and Divyansha Kaushik in lead roles. The romantic crime drama has been released with a very low buzz today. Read our review here.
What is it about?
Appudo Ippudo Eppudo is based in London and is about a race car driver, Rishi(Nikhil). After a breakup with his lover Tara(Rukmini Vasanth), he comes to London to make it big. The twist in the tale arises when Tara also lands in London and starts getting close to Rishi yet again. She plans a proper date to propose to Rishi but things get out of hand as Rishi’s other girlfriend, Tulasi(Divyansha Kaushik) comes out of nowhere and disturbs Rishi’s love life. If this was not enough, a dreaded gang headed by Ajay and John Vijay go after Rishi’s life making it even more complicated. What is the mess all about? Did Rishi win Tara’s hand? All these questions form the basic story of the film.
Performances:
Nikhil is a perfect fit for such lover-boy roles that have an edge. Despite the film being boring, he makes a decent impact with his performance. He makes us believe in the script with his sincere act till the very end. Rukmini Vasanth sleepwalks through her role. She has not been utilized properly in her character and looks out of focus despite having good looks. Divyansha Kaushik, who is not known more for her performances, is a surprise package in the film. Her role has good twists and the young actor holds your attention. John Vijay, the main villain is silly to the core. He is one of the most irritating factors in the film and ‘hams’ like there is no tomorrow. Ajay is getting outdated in the same kind of roles. Viva Harsha was just about okay in his fun role.
Technicalities:
Karthik has composed the music and not one song makes sense in the narrative. But his background score is decent and elevates the film in the second half. The production values are top-notch as the city of London has been captured quite well in the proceedings. The editing is bad as there are so many unnecessary scenes in the first half that could have been chopped off. Sudheer Varma’s writing, which is his strength lacks the punch. He did not focus on one aspect of the film and made the scenes boring to the core. The production design is neat and so are the dialogues.
Thumbs Up:
A few comedy scenes
Nikhil’s performance
Thumbs Down:
Silly Narration
Slow Pace
Lack of depth in emotions
Analysis:
Sudheer Varma is known for his crime dramas like Swamy Ra Ra and a few others. He has tried a similar concept with Appudo Ippudo Eppudo. When he directs a film, one expects a racy screenplay and new-age taking. But sadly, all this is missing in Appudo Ippudo Eppudo. The writing itself is bland and the thrills showcased do not impress you one bit. Appudo Ippudo Eppudo has romance, comedy, and crime angles, but sadly, not one aspect works here.
The romantic thread between Nikhil and Rukmini Vasanth is outdated and does not bring any freshness to the proceedings. One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is that the emotions hardly make any impact. By looking at the way, the core team performs, one can easily make out that they are sleepwalking in their roles. The main villain, John Vijay is miscast in the film. He needs to create an impact with his performance but instead, he irritates the audience with his cheap antics.
The first half takes forever to come to the main point. The only aspect that makes sense in the film is the twist that Divyansha Kaushik brings. This aspect has been thought of well by Sudheer Varma. The second half is a tad better than the first but by then, the audience loses interest in the proceedings. The last ten minutes are gripping but still, they are narrated in a very predictable note.
Appudo Ippudo Eppudo has so many logical issues. So much crime happens in London and the cops hardly do anything. It is like Indian gangs having fun in a foreign country and no one does anything about it. Such is the silliness of this project. After watching the film, one understands why the makers did not support the film much as it has issues right from the script to the execution level.
Finally, It is sad to see a talent like Sudheer Varma make films like these, and Appudo Ippudo Eppudo is one film that he and Nikhil should erase from their memory right away as it is boring, dull, and does not make any sense with its narrative.
Verdict: Ee Cinema Ento!
