In a startling report by a panel of the Ministry of Home Affairs submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Covid-19 third wave looms large. The report opined that the third wave may peak around October this year and it may hit kids.
A committee of experts constituted under the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) warned that the third wave is imminent. The committee asked the government to be prepared with all medical measures to face the third wave. It is predicted that the third wave may hit by late October.
It cautioned the government to look into facilities including doctors, staff, equipment like ventilators, ambulances, etc. It warned that the existing medical facilities are not sufficient if a large number of children become infected in the third wave.. These findings of the committee that was set up under the directions of the Home Ministry are raising eyeballs.
The panel stressed that the states should boost the Covid-19 care facilities for kids as the threat of third wave is intact. It also asked the government to prioritise vaccination among children.
The expert committee’s report expressed concern over the ‘slow’ vaccination. It said that India’s vaccination rate is a meager 9 percent whereas the USA’s vaccination rate is 52 percent (double doses).
It can be noted that the children ICUs have piled up with Covid-19 cases in the USA’s Florida currently. Amidst this, the expert committee suggests the PMO to take serious measures and also wants to prepare the states for an imminent third wave.
