US: Biden’s New Plan To Grant US Citizenship To Half Million Immigrants

US President Joe Biden’s administration announced that in coming months, it will allow certain spouses of US citizens without legal status to apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship.

This is a major move and could benefit as many as a half million immigrants. Lawmakers have been briefed on the plans and many are calling it a smart political move that could win him a good number of votes.

To qualify for this, an immigrant must have lived in the United States for 10 years as of Monday and be married to a US Citizen. If a qualifying immigrant’s application is approved, he or she would have three years to apply for a green card and receive a temporary work permit, shielded from deportation in the meantime.

More than 50,000 noncitizen children with parents who are married to US citizens could also qualify for the process. Well, there is no condition or requirement on how long the couple must have been married. Immigrants who reach that 10-year mark after Monday will not qualify for the program.
