It was always expected that Donald Trump would go extra hard on immigrants and temporary visa holders. Well, he certainly did not disappoint as he tightened the visa regulations and related logistical matters.
In the first line of duty, Trump stated that immigration policies and visa regulations will be enforced with utmost assertion now. In accordance the part-time jobs, culture which predominantly nurture the Indian student community has taken a hit.
As per reputed media report, Indian students in the United States are slowly but surely starting to quit their of campus, part time gigs.
The regulation that is in place for F1 visa holders is that they’re permitted to work 20 hours a week and that too only on campus. However, this regulation is flouted at large as students engage in off-campus part time gigs that goes down as undocumented work.
While most students usually work 6 hours a day on these gigs and get paid on hourly basis, there are certain students who take these jobs full time and work even 12-14 hours a day. This is the only way of income for them. This is against the law.
With the onset of the Trump administration, the authorities have started to tighten the noose around part-time gigs. Apparently, the authorities have started to check the places of work very frequently and making note of the personnel and their working models.
This illegal part-time culture itself is enough to deport any student back to their origin country. So the Indian students who have been working on these gigs over the last few years are now calling it quits. They are fear, deportation, and hence cutting down on these low income jobs.
Several students who spoke with this mentioned media outlet revealed that they can’t risk getting deported and defaulting student loans that they took to get to US. Subsequently, they have been quitting their part-time jobs.
It has been barely a week since Trump took charge of the United States, government and severe regulations are in place already. At this rate, one can only wonder what will be the situation for the next four years.
