Andhra Pradesh’s tableau on the eco-friendly Etikoppaka Bommalu (toys) attracted the attention of the viewers at the 76th Republic Day celebrations held at Kartavya Path in the national capital.
Featuring Lord Ganesha and Lord Venkateswara, the tableau rolled out in harmony with the celebrations, including the colours of the national flag.
It also showcased the manufacturing of the Etikoppaka toys. Children and women, who are the backbone of the country and the basic unit of a family in the society, were also carefully included into the tableau’s theme of sustainability.
The Etikoppaka toys are made from exquisite wood, and the art is rooted in a craftsmanship dating back to 400 years. The soft wood of Ankudu trees is a perfect choice for the toys to design them attractively.
The smooth contours and vibrant colours on the toys add to the exclusivity. The art of making the toys originated in Etikoppaka, a village in Andhra Pradesh. The toys, which have earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017, are made using natural dyes and lac resin, derived from plant-based sources.
The toys symbolize sustainability and often depict mythological figures, animals and shapes, and figurines from the ancient civilizations of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa.
These toys are safe for children and are admired by people worldwide, because they just are not playthings, but toys representing imagination and artistry.
Blending tradition and innovation, the art of Etikoppaka Bommalu preserves the legacy of Andhra Pradesh’s artisans for the future generations.
Featuring cultural dancing by the children in eloquent attire radiating glory, it rolled out through the Karthavya Path with majesty.
In tune with the Republic Day’s theme of Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Progress), the AP’s tableau highlighted the state as home to ancient culture and eternal artistic legacy.
