The women’s hockey team has lost the Bronze medal match against Great Britain with 3-4 goals. But the fighting spirit of the girls is unparalleled and every Indian is appreciating their efforts.
From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, many have expressed their immense pride for the girls’ utmost dedication.
Yet a loss is loss and post the match the girls were really heartbroken. Some of the players went into tears as well. Here is a picture of goalkeeper Savita who is really upset and kept sobbing. This picture of Savita has caught everyone’s attention and Indian fans could not contain it.
In another picture, we see player Neha on her knees with heads down. Great Britain players reach her and try to pacify her. That’s the spirit of the game.
This shows the kind of efforts the women’s hockey team has put in and when hard-work doesn’t pay off, that would be the natural reaction. This is the hockey team’s just third appearance in Olympics and to reach Semi-final and compete for Bronze medal is no less of an achievement.

The men’s team rewrote history on Thursday as it claimed an Olympic medal after 41 years, defeating Germany 5-4 to win the bronze in an edge-of-the-seat play-off match. Now, the Indian women’s team gave their best and lost to Great Britain in the bronze medal match. India scored 3 goals and GB scored 4 goals.
After losing to Argentina in the semi-final match by 1-2, the Indian women’s hockey team played with Great Britain for the Bronze Medal match. Although team India lost in the semi-final match, their performance received a wide appreciation from everyone.
In the bronze medal match on Friday, both India and Great Britain ended their first quarter with 0-0. Indian team defended the aggressive attack of Great Britain. The team played well and the goalkeeper Savita Punia saved multiple goals.
Great Britain player Ellie Rayer scored the first goal in the second quarter and opened the scorecard. Sarah Robertson scored the second goal and increased the lead to 2-0. India increased the pace in their play and Gurjit Kaur scored India’s first and second goals from penalty corners. Vandana Katariya made the third goal inside the goalpost and India occupied the lead by 3-2.
By the end of the second quarter, India took the lead. The third quarter began with a bang from Great Britain. Hollie Pearne-Webb gets the goal and the score was 3-3. By the end of the third quarter, India got a penalty corner but the team failed to turn it into a goal.
In the first quarter, Grace Balsdon scored a goal and Great Britain took the lead by 4-3.
This is the third representation of India’s women’s hockey team in the Olympics. The team began their tournament as underdogs and went on to reach the semi-finals. The team exhibited high spirit and commitment in the game. Today, all the 16 members of the team made the country proud.
