Commuters travelling between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana made an interesting observation at the borders these days.
Vehicle checking is a routine feature at the borders of any state and as part of it, Andhra police are checking the vehicles if the passengers are importing liquor bottles from the neighbouring state while at the same time, Telangana police are frisking the passengers’ vehicles if they are carrying ganja or any other contraband into their state.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has introduced a new liquor policy as part of which all the reputed brands have been banned and only locally distilled liquor, with new names, is being sold in the state. Moreover, ban had been imposed on transportation of liquor bottles from other states into Andhra Pradesh. Earlier, 3 liquor bottles of any size were permitted to be transported with each person entering the state.
People consuming the local brands say that the liquor does not give the same high as those by the national and international brands. With quality liquor becoming a scarcity in Andhra Pradesh even when the consumers are ready to shell out extra bucks, people travelling to and fro the Telugu states regularly and other occasional visitors are trying to secretly import liquor bottles of their favourite brands.
Of late, Andhra Pradesh has reportedly earned the dubious distinction of being a narcotics hub with many drug cases having links in the state. In the wake of such allegations and following the orders from their Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Telangana police are leaving no stone unturned in making Telangana a drug-free state. As part of it, the Telangana police are being double cautious in letting passengers from Andhra Pradesh into their state and checking them thoroughly if they are carrying drugs.
If both the states are committed to their causes, parents and caretakers of youths in both the Telugu states can hope for a bright future for their children.
