Jagan’s Another U-Turn!

Published by

CM Jaganmohan Reddy government, which has earlier repealed the 3 Capitals Bill and revoked the CRDA Act, has taken another u-turn on one of its key decisions. Jagan government which had thought of abolishing the Legislative Council has now decided to retain the Council. Earlier, AP state government had passed a statutory resolution in its state assembly on January 27, 2020, under Article 169 of the Constitution of India, requesting the Centre to abolish the state legislative council.

AP Assembly the other day passed a resolution to keep the council and proposed to withdraw the previous statutory resolution it made in January, 2020.

Minister for Legislative Affairs & Finance, Buggana Rajendranath, has introduced this resolution which was passed by a voice vote. Thus it puts an end to the uncertainty and ambiguity in the state legislature. It gave huge relief to the sitting MLCs. This passed fresh resolution will be sent to the Union Home Ministry.

It can be recalled that Jagan government turned angry and furious last year when it struggled to pass its bills in the council. Out of the total number of 58 members in the council, the YSRCP had only nine members, while the TDP had 33 members. The crucial 3 Capitals Bill was stalled by the Legislative Council as its chairman had referred the bill to a Select Committee. This made CM Jagan to decide to abolish the Council.

Surprisingly, just a day after repealing the 3 Capitals Bill, Jagan government has passed this resolution proposing to withdraw the previous resolution on Legislative Council.
