In tune with the YCP government’s argument that English medium was compulsory in education for the prosperity of students, one of the party MLAs, Madhusudhan Reddy, while speaking in the Assembly, made some funny but interesting remarks. The Opposition parties even moved the court to stop the state government from making English medium compulsory right from primary school-level.
The MLA said that the importance of English medium cannot be overlooked in education. “At times, we would even step into the wrong bathroom if we go to 5-star and 7-star hotels, if we do not know reading English,” he said and the entire House burst into laughter.
There would be some English spellings written indicating the differentiation between male and female washrooms which we would not be able to understand without the knowledge of English, he added. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Speaker Tammineni Sitaram also were amused at these remarks.
Madhusudhan Reddy tried to highlight the need for both English and Telugu media in education by drawing a similarity between lungi and a pair of trousers.
People would go for trousers while going into the public and attending formal meetings but would change to a ‘lungi’ while sleeping. Though Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu was not present in the House, the MLA made a mention of him and said that he wears white pants when he comes into the Assembly and while moving in the public but will he sleep in the same attire, he asked. He would certainly change into a ‘lungi’ while going to sleep which means both are equally important, he pointed out.
“We might have grown up wrapping ‘lungis’ and ‘langas’ but we begin wearing trousers in the prime of our life when we spend much time in public,” he said, adding that both English and Telugu medium of teaching were necessary for the holistic development of students.
He compared Telugu medium with a mother (Amma) and English medium to a wife and said both of them are necessary for enjoying a complete life.
Though short, the MLA drove his point home with a touch of humour, bringing smiles on the face of all the legislators in the House. A few netizens felt that the MLA appeared to be a participant in a ‘Jabardast’ show giving light entertainment to his colleagues.
