AP HC Judge Condemns Justice Chandru’s Remarks

Published by

AP High Court Judge Justice Bhattu Devanand condemned the remarks made by retired judge of Madras High Court Justice Chandru against the High Court. The much appreciated movie “Jai Bhim” was based on Justice Chandru’s battle against discrimination when he worked as an advocate.

Justice Chandru said that the AP High Court was crossing its limits and powers. The government is fighting for survival, not from political rivals or mass movements, but from the judiciary itself. He made these remarks while addressing a meeting organized by the AP Civil Liberties Association and Kula Vivaksha Porata Samiti on the occasion of World Human Rights Day.

He faulted the AP High Court for giving stay on FIR registered in connection with the Amaravati land scam and said that the courts were not doing justice. He also criticized the High Court for registering a CBI case when some people took to social media and posted something against the judiciary.

Reacting to these remarks, Justice Devanand said the allegations by Justice Chandru were baseless and that they had been protecting the fundamental rights of many citizens. How can Justice Chandru generalize the faults and criticize the entire High Court, he asked.

“A doctor (referring to anaesthesiologist Dr Sudhakar) was beaten up by the police right in the middle of the road in broad daylight and if one has to fight for rights, they need to go to Vizag. A good director can be asked to take a movie of these instances,” Justice Devanand said.

When compared to other high courts in the country, the one in Andhra Pradesh lacks basic amenities. Right from the judge to the security guards on the court premises do not have basic facilities and it is the responsibility of the government to provide it. Is it wrong to order for a CBI probe when ulterior motives are being tagged to High Court judges,” he asked.

The difference of opinion among the judges could prompt the YCP government to insult even the judiciary and not give a hoot the judges and court orders, feel opposition leaders in the state. Some TDP sympathisers even trolled Justice Chandru for his remarks which seem to be going in favour of the YCP administration.
