Congress Cat Fights Helped AAP

The Congress party has faced a massive defeat in Punjab and more shockingly the big names including Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi were overthrown in the Aam Aadmi Party’s wave.

Punjab CM Channi contested from two places i.e, Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur constituencies. In Chamkaur Sahib, Channi received 50,000 votes while AAP’s candidate whose name is also Charanjit Singh secured 54,000 votes. There are high chances of cross voting here. And in Bhadaur, CM Channi managed only 23,000 votes and his nearest rival Aam Aadmi Party’s Labh Singh Ugoke got over 57,000 votes.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also faced defeat. Captain who contested from Patiala Urban constituency lost to AAP’s Ajit Pal Singh Kohli. Acknowledging the poll defeat, Captain tweeted, “I accept the verdict of the people with all humility. Democracy has triumphed. Punjabis have shown true spirit of Punjabiyat by rising and voting above sectarian and caste lines.”

Punjab PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu was no exception to the AAP’s wave. He contested from Amritsar East constituency and in the initial rounds he displayed dominance but as the counting progressed, votes dried up for Sidhu and AAP’s candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur secured close to 40,000 votes.

Actor Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika Sood lost to AAP’s Amandeep Kaur Arora by a margin of over 21,000 votes.

Congress leadership, group politics and cat fights within Punjab Congress are to be blamed for this defeat. During the election campaign, Navjot Singh Sidhu lobbied for the Chief Ministerial post but the Congress high command was hesitant.
