Moved by the plight of the victim of gang-rape in Rajahmundry, TDP national president and Opposition leader N. Chandababu Naidu directed the party leaders to extend solatium of Rs 2 lakh to her. In the same breath, he announced that the party would adopt her and bear the expenses of her studies.
The party leaders reportedly explained him about the ghastly incident in which a Dalit girl, working as a sales girl in a footwear shop, was kidnapped by seven men, lodged in a house on the outskirts of the city and raped repeatedly for four days by all the kidnappers.
The TDP also constituted a committee to know about the heinous crime. A team of TDP leaders comprising former ministers and former MLAs visited Rajahmundry and consoled the victim. The fact-finding team also submitted a report to Naidu.
According to the report, the victim had completed Class X and a woman, who is her sister by relation, had cheated the girl.
Naidu asked the party leaders to instill confidence in the girl and tell her that the party would stand support to her. He said that the responsibility to empower such victims lies with the society.
Meanwhile, Rajamahendravaram Urban SI Shimoshi Bajpai said that 12 people were arrested in connection with the case and produced before the court. He said that the woman, who was the girl’s relative, took her to different places thrice from where the rapists took her to secluded places and committed the crime. All the three times, the girl was carefully left at her house threatening her of dire consequences if she told the truth.
However, the repeated rape made the girl seriously ill and when she was taken to the doctor, the parents knew of the crime committed on their daughter.
The SP said that kidnap, rape, POCSO, SC, ST Atrocity cases were registered against the accused.
