Providing a much needed relief, the government of India has slashed the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 8 and Rs 6 respectively. This announcement from the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was completely unexpected.
Hailing this decision, PM Modi tweeted that it’s always people first for us. “Today’s decisions, especially the one relating to a significant drop in petrol and diesel prices will positively impact various sectors, provide relief to our citizens and further ‘Ease of Living,’ added Mod in the same tweet.
But this reduction is no relief to the daily commuters because fuel prices continue to remain high. Moreover after reducing prices in November 2021, the prices went up again multiple times and when compared to the hike from November 2021 to May 2022, the prices of petrol and diesel are higher by at least Rs 1.
The opposition parties in the country termed this reduction as nothing but yet another election stunt. With PM Modi’s home state Gujarat going to Assembly polls in the next couple of months, the fuel prices were reduced in advance just like withdrawing controversial farm laws ahead of five state Assembly elections held in February this year.
