Former President Pranab Mukherjee, who underwent brain surgery and tested positive for Covid-19, on Monday, is critical and has been put on ventilator support. However, doctors said that his vital parameters were stable and that the surgery was successful.
He was admitted to the Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) hospital for removal of a clot in his brain. Mukherjee is critical and is on ventilator support, reports said.
A team of doctors is monitoring the health of 84-year-old Mukherjee, who was awarded the country’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, in 2019.
On Monday afternoon, Pranab himself tweeted that he tested positive for Coronavirus and requested the people who came in contact with him in the last week, to self-isolate and get tested for Covid-19.
Following his tweet, wishes for an early recovery poured in on the micro-blogging social media platform from many political leaders.
President Ram Nath Kovind spoke to Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha and enquired about his health, the Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted.
A scholar, author of many books and powerful orator, he had been a veteran Congress leader who was given due respect by being elected as India’s 13th President. With a political career spanning five decades, Pranab served as the President from July 2012 to 2017.
“We wish former President Pranab Mukherjee a speedy recovery from Covid,” the Congress said on its official Twitter handle.
Pranab’s son and a Congress leader, Abhijeet Mukherjee, tweeted, “I wish my father a speedy recovery! I appeal to all my countrymen to pray for his speedy recovery & good health.”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and party leaders Abhishek Singhvi and Mallikarjun Karge also wished Pranab Da a speedy recovery.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh visited the R&R Hospital and enquired about the former president’s health.
Union minister Piyush Goyal also wished good health for Mukherjee. Gulte also wishes the senior politician a speedy recovery.
