The YCP government has rechristened the NTR Health University after AP CM YS Jagan’s father, late YSR. The Health Department has prepared proposals by amending the University Act and these amendments were sent online to the cabinet in a rush on Tuesday night. As soon as the cabinet received the proposal, it was approved.
This amendment bill will be introduced in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday and since YCP has a clear majority in the Assembly, the bill would get an effortless nod. Once approved, NTR Health University will become Dr. YSR Health University.
Health University was a brain child of late NT Rama Rao. Before this, there was no separate university in AP for medical studies. There were many irregularities in this process and NTR felt that there should be an autonomous body to improve the quality of medical education and achieve supervision and control.
Accordingly NTR’s TDP government decided to set up a health university. In 1986, this health university was established but in 1998, then CM Chandrababu Naidu’s government named the university after NTR for his valuable contribution to establishing this university which changed the face of medical studies.
Learning about this development, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu expressed anger at the YCP government. “TDP totally opposes this move of Jagan government. Health University attained national recognition all because of NTR’s efforts and even the likes of YSR did not dare to rename this university. After 36 years it is meaningless to rename the university after YSR when there is absolutely zero contribution from him,” commented Chandrababu.
Questioning CM Jagan, Naidu accused the YCP government of looting Rs 450 crore of university funds and what right does the government have to remove NTR’s name for the health university. Moreover, the Jagan government has not been able to undertake a single new construction in three and a half years and is changing the names of the existing ones.
This decision of AP CM Jagan and YCP government may invite huge uproar and if they go ahead and get approval in the Assembly, it is certain to have political complications.
