Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s idea of “decentralization” through multiple capital cities has stroked a furore in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu state. Now, some Tamil Nadu ministers and leaders are demanding for the announcement of a second capital in the state. Ministers Uday Kumar and Selluri Raj have demanded that Madurai should be named as the second capital for Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, this hasn’t gone down well with another minister in CM Palaniswami’s cabinet. Minister Nataraj demanded that Trichy should be made as the second capital. Some other leaders of AIADMK also supported Nataraj’s demand of making Trichy as the second capital. Some stated that Madurai has a water crisis and hence demanding that Trichi should be made the second capital. AIADMK leaders from Trichi are demanding that AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran’s dream of making Trichi as the second capital.
With this, several leaders of the ruling party are divided on either side as some are demanding that Madurai should be made Second Capital whereas others are demanding Trichi for the Second Capital. Tamil Nadu leaders are now at loggerheads. Senior leaders and various businessmen from 10 districts are planning to hold a meeting on the capital issue.
Amidst this war between own party leaders over the Second Capital, CM Palaniswami is said to be in confusion. Many in Tamil Nadu are admitting that AP’s three capitals row is behind this capital furore in their state. Many analysts are predicting that more such issues may prop up in other states.
