AP CM YS Jagan was determined on introducing English medium and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus in government run schools. And yes the transition has happened and AP has emerged as the first state in the country to adopt CBSE system to government run schools.
AP has close to 60,000 schools (both government and private) but there were only about 325 CBSE and 55 Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) affiliated schools. For the year 2022-23, nearly 1000 schools have received CBSE affiliation and the state government aims to convert all the schools to CBSE system in the next two to three years.
The state education department applied CBSE affiliation for about 1,300 schools, out of which we have received the nod for 1,000 schools, confirmed AP school education commissioner S Suresh Kumar. CBSE syllabus was rolled out from this academic year starting with class VIII in these 1,000 schools.
In AP, government-run CBSE and ICSE schools were mostly located at Central government institutions, Navy or defence establishments which are spread across only a few cities. But the AP government intended to introduce the CBSE system all over the state, especially in the government run schools.
Apparently there was a demand for the CBSE system because of its holistic curriculum and a majority of competitive national exams are based on CBSE syllabus. A student studying in CBSE schools has an advantage in case their parents get transferred on work purpose to another state or place.
Considering all these factors, the AP government and CM Jagan were persistent in converting government schools to CBSE system.
