The Aam Aadmi Party led by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has yet again stunned the BJP by defeating it in the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections. New Delhi has three municipal bodies and they are Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB).
The elections were held for MCD which is the biggest municipal body and BJP has its ruling on MCD for the last 15 years. In the 250 member civic body, AAP has won 134 seats well above the half mark while the BJP secured just 104 seats. Congress showed no sign of improvement and was restricted to single digits.
AAP gained significantly compared to the 2017 elections. Kejriwal’s party won just 48 seats in the last elections and gave it all for the current elections. After winning the elections, Delhi CM Kejriwal added that the MCD needs the support of oppositions as well as the Centre and Prime Minister Modi.
This is a major setback for the BJP. Even though AAP retained power in 2015 and 2020, the BJP had the control over the MCD as a result the development works weren’t progressing as anticipated. AAP has prepared for the elections for a year and they laid out pre planned strategies to oust the BJP and it paid off.
