Ahead of 2024 polls, Andhra Pradesh state has got a new Governor. Former Supreme Court Justice Abdul Nazeer has been appointed as AP Governor by the President of India.
Rashtrapati Bhavan announced the names for appointment for the post of 12 Governors for states and one Lieutenant Governor in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, the present Governor of AP has now been appointed as the Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Justice Abdul Nazeer was the lone minority judge among the five judges constitution bench that gave verdict in Ayodhya case. He was also the one among the judges in the bench that gave the verdict declaring ‘Triple Talaq’ as unconstitutional.
Justice Nazeer led the Constitution Bench that had upheld the 2016 demonetisation process. He had also declared that there was no need to impose additional restrictions on the free speech right of Ministers, MPs, MLAs and leaders.
Born in Karnataka on Jan 5, 1958, Nazeer completed his LLB degree from SDM Law College, Mangaluru. He became an advocate and practiced as Karnataka High Court advocate. He was appointed as Additional Judge on May 12, 2003.
He became a permanent judge on Sep 24, 2004. Later, he was elevated to the Supreme Court Justice on Feb 17, 2017. A month after retiring from the Supreme Court, Abdul Nazeer is appointed as the Governor of AP.
