India’s democracy is often made fun by our very own politicians and here is an incident to prove it. The election of Mayor and deputy Mayor for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi took place in the most chaotic atmosphere. Before this the Mayor election was postponed nearly four times.
AAP’s Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Mayor of the MCD with 150 votes against 116 for BJP’s Rekha Gupta and AAP’s Aaley Mohammad Iqbal was elected as the Deputy Mayor, after he won with 147 votes, out of the total 266 votes cast.
But clashes took place after the election of Mayor and deputy Mayor. MCD needs to elect six members of the apex-decision making standing committee and to gain upper hand in this committee, AAP and BJP tried all the tricks. Unfortunately this election took an unexpected turn with AAP and BJP councilors hurling water bottles, fruits and chappals and boxes at each other.
This clash went on till Thursday morning and the MCD House was adjourned close to 13 times. In one video, two women councilors can be seen holding each other on the neck and falling and in another, a group of women councilors manhandling each other.
It’s shameful that Councilors have indulged in this fight just to gain supremacy over the MCD. Both AAP and BJP should be blamed for making a mockery of democracy.
