Rahul Gandhi Disqualified As Lok Sabha MP!

Published by

Congress national leader and its former president Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as Lok Sabha MP. This is following a Surat court convicted Rahul in 2019 criminal defamation case. The court found Rahul guilty in the case and sentenced two years jail term for his alleged remarks “how come all thieves as Modi as the common surname”. With this, the Lok Sabha secretariat announced the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Wayanad MP and declared the constituency as vacant. The Election Commission can announce a special election for the vacant seat.

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a notification issued today. Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, says that the moment a member of parliament is convicted of any offence and sentenced for at least two years, she or he attracts disqualification.

Meanwhile, the Congress party too issued a statement. It said it would fight legally and politically. The Congress also said it is a conspiracy to silence Rahul who has been fighting against Modi and questioning his relationship with Gautam Adani.

“Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership has been terminated. He is constantly fighting for you and this country, from the streets to the Parliament, trying everything possible to save democracy. Despite every conspiracy, he will continue this fight at all costs and will take just action in this matter. The fight continues,” Congress said in a tweet in Hindi.
