YS Sharmila, who entered Telangana politics with great fanfare, seems to be struggling to make an impact. After floating the YSRTP a year ago and embarking on a 4000-kilometre Paadayatra to connect with the people, Sharmila has gained some followers but failed to expand her party’s reach in the state.
One of the key reasons for YSRTP’s lack of progress is Sharmila’s failure to build a strong team of leaders who can contest in all 119 constituencies. Instead, she focused on promoting her personal image by leveraging her father’s legacy, the late YS Rajasekhar Reddy.
Despite her close proximity to politics, Sharmila seems to have overlooked some of the basic tenets of political leadership. This could work against her in the upcoming elections.
Sharmila had planned to contest from Paleru constituency in Khammam district, where her Paadayatra had received a positive response. However, several party leaders have resigned in recent times, including Khammam YSRTP chief Lakkineni Surender and his followers. This has led to a downward spiral in YSRTP’s fortunes.
Despite these challenges, Sharmila has not taken any concrete steps to retain her party leaders or safeguard their interests. With rumours swirling about her political future, it remains to be seen if Sharmila can revive YSRTP’s fortunes and make a mark in Telangana politics.
