Modi’s Rs 10,000 Cr Gift To Jagan Govt!

Published by

The YCP-led Andhra Pradesh government, which is facing severe financial crisis, received significant relief from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government in New Delhi. The Union government has sanctioned Rs 10,460.87 crore to the AP government under Revenue Deficit, providing much-needed respite as the state struggles to meet its day-to-day expenses.

The sanction of funds was carried out by the Union Finance department’s Assistant Director, Mahendra Chandelia, under the category of ‘Special Financial Assistance.’ Previously, the Telugu Desam Party-led government had repeatedly sought financial support from the NDA government and Prime Minister Modi during their coalition. However, only partial funds were released during the 2014-2019 period, while the majority of the requests were delayed or ignored.

Following the split between the TDP and BJP, the NDA government sidelined the issue of providing financial assistance for Revenue Deficit. Over the past four years, the Modi government has rarely sanctioned these funds. In March, the Centre sought details of the Revenue Deficit from the AP state government amidst the ongoing debate between the Centre and the states.

The sanctioning of these funds has sparked political discussions in AP, with speculations arising about the BJP’s proximity to the YCP, especially in light of rumors that the TDP and Jana Sena are reluctant to reunite with the BJP. However, it is the BJP that does not wish to include the Telugu Desam Party in their alliance with the Jana Sena. The timing of the Revenue Deficit funds has gained significance as elections are approaching.

Regardless of the political implications, the AP government will receive Rs 10,460.87 crore, which will strengthen their ability to allocate more funds to Chief Minister Jagan Reddy’s flagship welfare schemes (Nava Ratnalu).
