The construction of the Polavaram Dam has been a monumental undertaking that has seen its fair share of challenges and setbacks. However, under the leadership of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, the project has undergone a remarkable transformation, with a renewed focus on the welfare of the people and the overall development of the region.
The significance of the Polavaram Dam cannot be overstated. It is poised to provide irrigation water to a staggering 27 lakh acres of land, including 10 lakh acres in East and West Godavari districts, 13 lakh acres in Krishna district, and an additional 4 lakh acres through the 182-kilometer long left canal from Polavaram to Vizag. Furthermore, the right canal, stretching 172 kilometers, will supply irrigation water up to Vijayawada, benefiting an additional 3.20 lakh acres. The potential for agricultural growth and economic prosperity in these areas is immense.
In addition to irrigation, the Polavaram Dam will generate 960 megawatts of power, utilizing its vast water reserves. This will contribute significantly to meeting the energy needs of the region. Moreover, the project aims to address the pressing issue of drinking water scarcity in nearly 140 villages, providing much-needed relief to the local communities.
It is important to note that the Polavaram Dam’s progress was hindered for several years after the tenure of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Successive governments did not prioritize the project, resulting in cost escalations and significant delays, ultimately affecting the welfare of the people.
However, since assuming office in 2019, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has displayed unwavering determination to bring the Polavaram Dam to fruition. His efforts to garner support from the central government have yielded positive results, with the Union Jal Shakti Ministry sanctioning an impressive amount of funds. Negotiations and relentless pursuit of the project’s interests have led to a staggering allocation of Rs 12,911 crore from the Government of India, a substantial increase compared to the initial estimates of Rs 1249 crore.
This proactive approach from Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has breathed new life into the project and instilled hope in the hearts of the people. With ongoing discussions and the potential for additional funding, it is clear that the Polavaram Dam will witness significant progress under his leadership.
It is essential to recognize the positive trajectory set by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy in contrast to the previous administration’s lack of focus on Polavaram. While acknowledging the challenges faced in the past, it is important to look towards the future with optimism, as the true potential of this colossal project is now being realized. The Polavaram Dam will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for the region’s development, benefiting the public and ushering in a new era of prosperity.
