Speculation is swirling as reports suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is considering contesting from Rameswaram, a renowned pilgrimage site in Tamil Nadu, for the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
The Tamil media outlet Malai Malar has reported on Modi’s purported willingness to contest from this southern constituency, a move that has been acknowledged by BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu. While not confirmed, it appears increasingly likely that Modi may indeed choose Rameswaram as his electoral battleground.
The BJP’s motive behind this unexpected decision lies in its ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in southern India, where the party has faced consistent setbacks. Most recently, the BJP suffered a defeat in Karnataka, the only southern state it had managed to govern. Looking ahead to the Parliamentary elections, the BJP has set a goal to secure as many seats as possible from the southern region.
The party believes that fielding Modi as a candidate in direct competition would create a significant impact in the south. Leveraging the sentiment surrounding the imminent completion of the Ayodhya temple, the BJP aims to capitalize on the connection to Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) and harness the “Ram” sentiment for electoral gain.
Drawing inspiration from previous instances where prominent leaders contested from regions outside their traditional strongholds, such as Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy in Wayanad and Indira Gandhi’s victory in Medak, the BJP seeks to utilize Modi’s political charisma to penetrate the southern electorate.
However, the BJP’s move is both bold and surprising, particularly in Tamil Nadu where the party has negligible presence. Furthermore, Rameswaram, with its significant Muslim voter base, poses a challenge as they are expected to vote against Modi. The current Member of Parliament from Rameswaram represents the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which is in alliance with the ruling DMK. The Congress party also commands a reasonable vote share in Rameswaram, and their alliance with the DMK could bolster their chances of securing victory. If Modi decides to contest, winning the seat would require a political miracle.
Ultimately, the final decision rests with the BJP leadership and Modi himself regarding the feasibility and potential impact of contesting from Rameswaram. As the political landscape unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Modi’s potential candidacy in the south can yield the desired results for the BJP.
