SC serious after two women paraded naked in Manipur!

Published by

The Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over the video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur. Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud took suo motu cognizance of a video that emerged online yesterday and went viral.

The Chief Justice Chandrachud said that the court is deeply disturbed and such incidents are highly unacceptable. “Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife. Grossest of constitutional abuse. We are deeply disturbed by the videos which have emerged. If the government does not act, we will,” said the Chief Justice.

The apex court also served notices to Centre and the Manipur state government to take appropriate measures immediately and nab the mob who were seen in the video and punish them.

Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central government agreed with the Chief Justice and informed the top court that the Centre is seriously working on identifying the men involved in this incident.

The Supreme Court listed the case for the next hearing on July 28th.

Violence in Manipur erupted in April following the state’s High Court order asking the state government to consider inclusion of the Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list. This led to a clash between the Meetei/Meitei community and Kuki community.

The violence against women reportedly took place on May 4th but there is no official word from the state government. Nonetheless the video surfaced on Wednesday evening and it brought an outrage all over the country.
