There seems to be a rift between Telangana PCC chief Revanth Reddy and political strategist Sunil Kanugolu. Sunil Kanugolu was instrumental in Congress’ victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections, and the party intended to appoint him for the Telangana state Assembly elections as well.
Initially, Revanth Reddy had a favorable opinion of Sunil Kanugolu due to his successful track record. However, things didn’t go as planned, and there are now indications that their relationship has soured for several reasons.
One of the main issues arose when Revanth Reddy made controversial comments during his United States tour, particularly regarding free electricity to the agricultural sector and announcing a CM candidate. These comments negatively impacted the party’s image, and senior party members like Komatireddy and Bhatti were upset with him.
In response, Revanth blamed Sunil Kanugolu for not effectively handling the damage control regarding the free electricity issue. Moreover, it appears that Sunil is disappointed with Revanth’s excessive involvement in devising party strategies. He also expressed frustration over Revanth’s insistence on receiving positive reports for candidates closely associated with him.
The situation escalated to the point where Sunil reportedly left for Bengaluru without informing anyone in the Telangana Congress and has been avoiding calls. The Congress high command has been made aware of this development and is now exploring alternative plans.
One potential replacement for Sunil Kanugolu is former IAS officer Shashikanth Senthil, who joined the Congress party after resigning from his position in 2019. He previously designed the party’s campaign for Tamil Nadu elections, achieving some degree of success.
Ultimately, the decision on a new strategist will be made by Telangana Congress in-charge Manikarao Thakre and Revanth Reddy, and an official announcement is expected to be made later this week or early next. The party hopes that this change will help resolve the issues and improve its prospects in the upcoming elections.
