The volunteer system in Andhra Pradesh has been a topic of discussion in recent times, with a spike in crime incidents involving volunteers. In a recent and tragic incident, a ward volunteer was responsible for the death of a 72-year-old woman in Vizag.

The ward volunteer, identified as Rayavarapu Venkatesh, worked part-time at a fast-food joint run by Kotagiri Srinivas in Purushothapuram. On a fateful Sunday night, Venkatesh visited Srinivas’ residence and then returned to the fast-food joint by 10 PM.

Later that night, upon returning home, Srinivas made a horrifying discovery – his mother was found lifeless, and her gold chain was missing. In response, he immediately called emergency services at 100, and the police arrived at the scene. After gathering information from Srinivas and examining CCTV footage, it became evident that Venkatesh was seen leaving the apartment.

The police swiftly apprehended Venkatesh, who was found guilty of committing the heinous crime. Further investigation is underway as Venkatesh remains in police custody, and the victim’s body, identified as Varalaxmi, has been sent for post-mortem examination at KGH.

With incidents of crimes involving volunteers on the rise, the opposition in Andhra Pradesh has demanded that the state government implement thorough background verifications before making volunteer appointments. The incident has brought attention to the volunteer system and the need for enhanced scrutiny to ensure safety and integrity in such roles.
