Popular actress and former MP Jayaprada has been sentenced to six-month jail. The Egmore court in Chennai pronounced six months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 fine for the actress in connection with an unpaid ESI scandal.
Going into details, Jayaprada along with two others Ram Kumar and Raja Babu had run a cinema theatre in Chennai’s Rayapeta. Initially, the theatre reaped some profits. However, the business took a severe beating and incurred hefty losses. With this, Jayaprada and her partners have shut down the theatre.
While paying salaries to the employees of the theatre, the management had cut ESI from their salaries. But after the theatre’s operations were shut, the management had not paid the ESI amount to the respective employees. The employees have approached the Labour Government Insurance Corporation in this issue. Taking the issue seriously, the Corporation has moved the Egmore court.
Meanwhile, Jayaprada offered to pay the entire pending amount to the staff and appealed to the court to dismiss the case. However, the petitioner’s advocate objected to Jayaprada’s appeal. The Egmore court ruled in six-month imprisonment to all the three along with fine. More details are awaited.
