While the BJP has long voiced its commitment to “One Nation, One Election,” as five state elections draw near, political analysts suspect a hidden agenda. Some believe the BJP is strategically raising the issue of “Jamili elections” in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, set to take place in the next nine months. This development has piqued the interest of various political parties.
Surprisingly, the Center has announced a special session of Parliament starting on the 18th of this month. Simultaneously, reports suggest the formation of a committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, to explore the feasibility of conducting “Jamili elections.”
Observing this rapid progress, political circles speculate that the BJP government is preparing a roadmap for “Jamili elections” and may introduce the Jamili Election Bill in the upcoming special session.
Earlier, the Central Election Commission had declared its readiness for “Jamili elections” contingent on constitutional amendments and provided some recommendations. However, doubts linger about the practicality of such a move, as it would necessitate advancing elections in some states while postponing them in others.
Despite the opposition parties uniting under the banner of the India Alliance, it seems the BJP’s tactics to divert public attention and maintain its position remain unswayed. CPI National Secretary Narayana contends that the BJP resorts to such measures out of fear of the India Alliance. Some constitutional experts argue that “One Nation, One Election” contradicts the spirit of federalism.
Nonetheless, the BJP is forging ahead with determination, known for making decisive decisions and swiftly implementing them, whether it’s demonetization or the recent reduction in gas cylinder prices. Their approach remains consistent. The opposition’s response to the BJP’s push for “Jamili elections” amidst the India Alliance’s meetings in Mumbai remains to be seen.
