In the wake of rapid increase in the Covid-19 cases in Hyderabad region, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections have become a major challenge to the Election Commission. The State Election Commissioner (SEC) is contemplating conducting elections through the ballot system instead of using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Considering several requests from voters who are feared to use the EVMs as there are chances of spread of virus, the EC is keen to opt for a ballot-model. However, the final decision would be taken after consulting all political parties.
Meanwhile, the response for the voter enrollment is said to be good. Over 52,000 people have enrolled themselves as new voters in the 15 assembly constituencies in Hyderabad district. Another 52,000-plus people have applied for change of address.
The EC is going to publish the draft roll on November 16 with fresh additions and changes. If there are any corrections or changes in the draft roll, voters can raise their objections between Nov 16 to Dec 15. The final draft roll will be released on Jan 15.
Overall, 72 number of polling stations are expected to be relocated and 12 polling stations will have name change due to change of ownership or other reasons. All major political parties are gearing up to give a tough fight. While ruling TRS has an advantage, Opposition Congress and BJP are trying to give a serious fight.
