Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created a new record by being the head of government for 20 continuous years. He had crossed the milestone by being either a Chief Minister or Prime Minister for the last 20 years.
Twenty years ago, on October 7, 2001, he assumed charge as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the first time. Since then, he had been the CM for three successive terms.
After that, he took a leap into the national politics and ensured a thumping victory to the BJP. He had been successful in bringing the BJP to power after 10 years of Congress rule in the country.
For two consecutive times, in 2014 and 2019, he was elected as the PM. His second term as the PM is underway and he has a good number of supporters in the country and abroad too.
Since 2001, he has been on a winning streak. After assuming charge as the CM of Gujarat, he introduced several reforms and with many of them proving successful, the state’s fortune had changed.
Firstly he initiated reforms in the power sector which usually would be withdrawn after the political cause is served. However, Modi did not step back. To win the trust of both farmers and ordinary people, he ensured that power was supplied to every nook and corner of the state.
Believing that the state would witness an upward graph only if investments were drawn, he held a state-level investment summit in Gujarat in 2003. The overwhelming response to the summit helped Gujarat register progress in the industrial, agricultural and infrastructure sectors.
He introduced Kanya Kelavani programme to encourage female literacy. As part of this programme, he visited villages and made night stay to create awareness among the villagers about the need to get their daughters educated and the programme registered huge success, which drew the attention of many foreigners.
In 2014, he was sworn-in as the Prime Minister for the first time. He introduced several reforms even in the Centre. In 2016, he took up the demonetisation drive, in 2017, he introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) , in 2018, he launched Ayushman Bharat and in 2019, he provided EBC reservations, Beti Padaon-Beti Bacahon, Swachh Bharat, Make In India, scrapped Triple Talaq and Artice 370, made an amendment to the Citizenship Act. He ensured that a final decision was taken on several controversial issues during his term as the PM. Even the surgical strikes in PoK, at Balakot, were planned under Modi’s rule.
This year, Modi’s government had taken concrete steps to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in the country. To compensate the loss caused due to pandemic-induced lockdown, Modi introduced Atma Nirbhar Bharat. The Ayodhya Rama Janmabhoomi controversy which had been pending for decades was also resolved during his tenure. Modi himself participated in the foundation ceremony of Ram Mandir construction at Ayodhya.
The BJP leaders are hailing Modi for being the chief of the government for 20 consecutive years, which they say is not a small task. Working tirelessly, maintaining unblemished credentials and ensuring ‘Sabke sath, Sabka vikas’ are the cornerstones for his success.
