The election season is here in Andhra Pradesh and the confirmed MLA and MP candidates of the YSR Congress and the TDP+ alliance have started their intent-driven election campaigns. But in the case of the YCP candidate from Vemuru, Varakuti Ashok Babu, he is facing criticism for giving a dhamki to the NRIs who support Telugu Desam.
Speaking in his election campaign in Kuchipudi, Ashok Babu warned the NRI supporter group of TDP of serious consequences if they come down to India to support their party.
According to media reports, the YCP MLA candidate warned TDP NRI supporters that they might not go back from India if they came here to take part in the campaign of the TDP candidate. This could be an attempt to restrict NRIs from supporting the MLA candidate of their choice.
This statement from the YCP candidate has invited criticism on social media platforms as TDP loyalists are commenting that this reflects the vindictive and personal targeting agenda of YCP, as a whole, which is against the spirit of democracy. One must note that such anti-social comments will only reflect poorly on the YSR Congress. Threatening NRIs with consequences for supporting the party of their choice is not a welcome move by any party, particularly the ruling party.
