Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu introduced the skill-census program after taking charge a few days ago. It is one of the five files that Naidu signed after assuming the Chief Minister’s office. As per his orders, the Skill Development and Training department released GO 13 on June 13 and ordered the start of the process.

On June 24, the state cabinet also unanimously approved the introduction of the skill census program. Meanwhile, many people are wondering what this skill census is all about. Here is all you need to know about it.

India is a country which has a large percentage of youth and also a large percentage of unemployment. Andhra Pradesh is also one of the states which suffers from heavy unemployment. Even though they have skills, many people lack opportunities. On the other side, some youngsters lack the skills that are needed for a certain job. Skill census would fill this gap.

To address this unemployment, taking a census of youngsters’ skills is important. The government plans to record the skill census of people, further making it easier to give them jobs where they fit in or train them with the necessary skill sets.

There are 310 engineering colleges, 1400 degree colleges, 267 polytechnic colleges, and 516 vocational and ITI colleges in the state. Around 4.4 lakh students graduate from these colleges every year, but only a single-digit per cent of them secure a job.

Chandrababu Naidu stated that through a skill census, the government would identify the skills among youth, train them in extra skill sets if needed, and further improve their opportunities. He said that the initiative has been designed to make youngsters stand on their own feet. He termed it as the real development that the state needs. The process of skill census would begin very soon.
