The much contentious ‘Rushikonda Palace’ that triggered a huge debate not just in the political circles but also among the common people because of the clandestine manner with which it was constructed by the previous government by splurging crores is back in the news once again when it appeared like the dust around the controversy just now started to settle, at least temporarily.
As per the latest reports, the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company, which is apex body for electricity supply throughout the state, has issued notices to Rushikonda Palace in Vishakapatnam regarding the pending power dues from last November.
There are two HT power connections to this luxurious palace and each of these services incurred a monthly rent of Rs 80,000 and Rs 7,00,000 respectively. From last November to this May, a total due to 54.52 lakhs was kept pending. Including the additional 6 lakhs power bill for June month, the total pending bill amounts to a whopping 60 lakhs.
Though the palace wasn’t operational till now for any purpose, an average of 2000 units power was consumed daily in the last nine months only to illuminate it with the help of numerous swanky chandeliers and other lights equipped all over the plushy building.
The electricity department has issued notices to clear the pending due within 15 days. Till now, there is no response from the government on this issue.
Last month, a massive controversy kicked off when the local leaders of Vishakapatnam barged into the palace and revealed the inside visuals to the media. While the YSRCP contended that the upscale palace was built to accommodate dignitaries visiting the city for official purpose, the TDP and Janasena came down heavily on Jagan Mohan Reddy for building such a posh palace with government money to accommodate his residence.
