AP CM Jagan has given a much-needed shock to boozers. In a fresh development, AP state government imposed a ban on illegal transportation of liquor bottles from other states. In its order, the government said the ban applies on all liquor bottles from other states and it made it clear that there is no exemption for even carrying 3 liquor bottles. However, the state government said there is no revision on the Centre’s rule which permits to carry 2 litres of liquor from people who are traveling from abroad. International travelers can purchase 2 litres of liquor in duty-free shops and those bottles can be allowed by the states. AP government said it permits the said liquor as per the Centre’s norms.
Ever since AP state government announced a phase-wise reduction of alcohol consumption and its plans to hike the rates and availability of major liquor brands, this led to illegal transportation of liquor from neighbouring states like Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu. Especially liquor bottles from Hyderabad are being transported illegally to cities like Vijayawada and Vizag causing a great revenue loss to AP government. As AP government’s A.P. State Beverages Corporation Limited (APSBCL) is running the retail stores in the state, it said to have identified that illegal transportation of liquor from other states is affecting the income of the excise department.
The latest move is a big shocker to boozers as they either need to confine to local liquor brands available for sale in AP or to shell out huge amounts and go to star hotels for their favourite brands.
