A lot has changed since the 2020 GHMC elections which were outrightly dominated by the BRS which was in power then, followed by BJP and MIM. These parties secured 56, 48, and 44 seats respectively in that year’s election while Congress was confined to just 2 seats.
Coming to the 2025 elections, it is projected to become the most fiercely contested election in GHMC history. Along with the usual suspects of Congress, BJP, MIM and BRS, the Telugu Desam Party is also said to be in serious contention this time. TDP’s resurgence in Telangana is fueled by the big win in the AP election.
While TDP is registering monstrous membership registrations in AP, the membership drive is simultaneously happening in Telangana as well and it is heard that the joining here are astronomical as well.
TDP has anyway been a fundamentally strong party in Telangana, regardless of the no-contest in the 2023 assembly elections. The big win in AP, paired with the alliance with BJP which is likely to extend to Telangana too is bound to make TDP a dominating force here in Hyderabad as well.
Though Congress won the assembly election, the party’s strength in the city premises is not very appealing, as was seen in the assembly election then. As for BRS, the party is still struggling to regain footing after having secured 0 seats in the recent MP election. This leaves huge upside potential for the TDP-BJP alliance and this nexus could very well have a big say in the GHMC polls this year.
It is no secret that TDP cadres too sided with Congress in the assembly election. Now, once TDP cadres are channeled in a different direction and instructed to work for the TDP-BJP nexus in GHMC polls, the results could be evident.
If we add the fact TDP has a strong presence in key urban pockets of Hyderabad, including Jubilee Hills, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Serilingampally, Sanat Nagar and Rajendra Nagar, it could be understood that the party could have a strong say in the GHMC polls this year.
With so many factors in play, the coming GHMC elections are going to be one of a kind with so many parties in the contest. But many eyes will firmly be on TDP so as to assess how the party still holds fort in the GHMC urbane premises.
