YS Sharmila, the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), staged a silent protest in Visakhapatnam on Friday, condemning the remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that belittled Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution.
Sharmila launched her protest in response to Amit Shah’s controversial comments and demanded his immediate resignation from his ministerial position. She further called on PM Narendra Modi to remove Shah from the Cabinet if he failed to step down voluntarily.
Sharmila expressed her outrage, accusing nearly every party in Parliament, except Congress, of being too afraid to condemn Amit Shah’s comments. Even the ruling coalition in Andhra Pradesh, which includes the TDP and Jana Sena, she claimed, lacked the courage to speak out against Shah’s remarks. Sharmila slammed these parties, particularly the TDP and Jana Sena, who, according to her, had used Dalit and BC votes to gain power in Andhra Pradesh, yet remained silent while Dr. Ambedkar—who is a symbol of hope for these very communities—was disrespected. She urged these parties to reconsider their stance and align themselves with those who honor Dr. Ambedkar.
Sharmila did not spare her own brother, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Despite gaining power in Andhra Pradesh in 2019 with the support of Dalits and BCs, she accused Jagan’s party of failing to speak out against the derogatory comments about Ambedkar. Sharmila went on to make a pointed remark, claiming that Jagan’s party has an “illicit relationship” with the BJP, which, she believes, is reflected in their silence on this issue.
Sharmila also emphasized the importance of Dr. Ambedkar’s role in uniting India, with its diverse religions and castes, and called on all political parties to recognize this fundamental contribution. She urged them to reflect on the values Ambedkar instilled in the country and to honor his legacy in their political actions.
