Harish Kumar Gupta Is New DGP Of AP

Chandrababu Naidu’s government has appointed Senior IPS Harish Kumar Gupta as the new Director General of Police for Andhra Pradesh. Necessary orders to this effect were passed just a while ago by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand.

Harish Kumar Gupta is a 1992 IPS Officer who is currently serving as DG for Vigilance and Enforcement. He is a native of Jammu and Kashmir and will replace incumbent Dwaraka Tirumala Rao who will retire on superannuation this January 31st. Harish Kumar Gupta will have only seven months of service. However, his tenure may be extended as there are no suitable officers to hold the post after him.

Harish Kumar Gupta was appointed as DGP by the Election Commission of India before the Assembly elections of AP after KV Rajendranath was transferred over lapses in PM security in Chilakaluripeta when the model code of conduct came into force.

DGP of Fireservices Madireddy Pratap and suspended Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu were the senior most IPS officers . But, the government preferred Harish Kumar Gupta for the coveted post as he is an officer with clean credentials in his service.

Recently, a PIL was filed in AP High Court over the manner in which the government has flouted Supreme Court directives in the selection of DGPs. However, the Court dismissed the petition. So, the government immediately passed the orders today evening.
