The Indian politics are now revolving around the delimitation process that was commissioned by the government of India. While the opposition INDIA block has been vehemently opposing the same, YS Jagan who largely maintained a neutral stance on this has now written to Modi on this matter.
In his elaborate letter to Modi, YS Jagan started by saying “Request for the delimitation exercise to be conducted in such a manner that no State would have to endure any reduction in its representation in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, in terms of its share in total no. of seats in the house.”
Primarily speaking, Jagan spoke at length about the need to exercise caution and restraint when it comes to the implementation of the delimitation process.
I therefore emphasize the need to amend the Constitution to give effect to such proportionate increase in seats for each State. This would ensure that no State would have to encounter any reduction in its representation in the House of the People, in terms of the share of the seats allocated to that State in the total seats, Jagan added.
The Constitutional framework mandates the readjustment of the allocation of seats in the House of the People to the States and the division of each State into territorial constituencies after the Census exercise.
The strong opinion expressed by Jagan is that the delimitation process and the subsequent restraining of the South Indian states would further deplete the significance of south states in national policy making.
