The Telangana High Court delivered a sensational verdict in the Dilsukhnagar blast case from February 21, 2013. The court upheld the death sentences already imposed by the NIA court on five individuals found guilty in the case. The NIA court had completed the trial in 2016 and sentenced the accused to death. However, the accused appealed to the Telangana High Court, seeking to be spared from the death penalty. After multiple hearings, the High Court delivered its verdict on Tuesday morning.
The High Court confirmed the death penalty imposed by the NIA court, stating, “The death sentence is justified.” The court also noted that one of the key accused, Riyaz Bhatkal, remains absconding. In the tragic incident, 18 people lost their lives and 131 others were severely injured. The twin blasts in the crowded Dilsukhnagar area caused a nationwide shock at the time.
After the case was handed over to the NIA, the investigation proceeded quickly, and the NIA special court sentenced the accused to death. The Telangana High Court recently upheld this verdict. Justices Lakshman and Sudhakar, who were part of the bench, dismissed the petition filed by the accused, endorsing the NIA court’s ruling.
