In a surprising turn during a hearing, the High Court posed a pointed question to YSRCP MP Peddireddy Mithun Reddy, asking, “You’re requesting audio and video recordings of the interrogation—are you afraid that the officials might assault you?”
This development is part of the ongoing investigation into the liquor scam that allegedly occurred during the YSRCP’s tenure. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case, under the supervision of Vijayawada Police Commissioner Rajasekhar Babu. A few weeks ago, notices were issued to Mithun Reddy in connection with the case.
In response, Mithun Reddy approached the Supreme Court and obtained interim protection from arrest. However, his plea for anticipatory bail was rejected by the High Court, after which the Supreme Court granted specific directions in his favor.
As per the latest developments, Mithun Reddy is scheduled to appear before the SIT this Friday. In anticipation of the interrogation, he filed a petition with the High Court requesting permission to record the proceedings via audio and video.
During the hearing on Thursday evening, the High Court declined the request for personal audio and video recordings. It noted that the SIT office is already equipped with CCTV cameras that capture everything. However, the Court granted him permission to be accompanied by two lawyers during the interrogation.
It was during this discussion that the Court questioned the intent behind the recording request, asking whether the petitioner feared physical harm from officials. Mithun Reddy’s legal team clarified that they had no such fear, but were requesting recordings purely for evidence.
The court further instructed that the existing CCTV systems be checked in advance to ensure they are operational. It warned the police not to later claim technical issues or failure in recordings after the interrogation is completed.
