Major Threat To KBR Park, Flyovers Coming Up Around

In what could be a major threat to KBR Park which daily sees several joggers and walkers, the Telangana state government’s proposed flyovers around the park could shrink the walkway.

As part of Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), the Telangana government proposed to accommodate flyovers at six junctions around the KBR Park. As it is a national park, the government has sent proposals to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest for clearance. However the Union ministry has asked the state government to take a public opinion and asked to conduct a public hearing. But no such thing was done by the Telangana government citing the pandemic. Surprisingly the public hearing was supposed to be held in March 2019 but the government kept delaying it and now the government got an exemption and eventually the decks have cleared.

Currently the width of the walkway around the park at some places is 25 metres to 35 metres. With the latest development, the walkway width would be just three metres and about 1394 trees need to be taken down.

As soon as this news broke out, many forums have slammed the Telangana government. They have demanded the government to drop this idea as KBR Park is a major lung space in this urban concrete jungle.
