10 Things About New Parliament Building

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone for a new Parliament building which would stand testimony to the pride of Indians, at 1 pm on December 10.

The new building will replace the 93-year-old structure built by the Britishers. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that sessions of both the Parliament houses would be held in the new building on completion of 75 years of Independence.

The leaders of all the political parties would attend the first meeting either physically or virtually.

The highlights of the new building are:

  1. The new building was designed by HCP Design, Planning and Management Private Limited. The new building would be constructed by Tata Projects Limited.
  2. The construction of the new building is likely to be completed by 2022, the 75th year of country’s Independence.
  3. It would be built at a cost of Rs 971 crore.
  4. The building would have six entry points – one for the President and Prime Minister, one for Lok Sabha Speaker, Rajya Sabha chairperson and MPs, a ceremonial entrance in general and another separate entrance for MPs, apart from two public entrances.
  5. The building would have four floors – lower ground, upper ground, first and second floors. It would be constructed in 64,500 square metres.
  6. The Lok Sabha chamber which would be in 3,015 square mt will have 888 seats. The Rajya Sabha chamber, spread in 3,220 square metres, will have 384 seats.
  7. The earthquake-resistant building would have 120 offices like Committee meeting hall, Parliamentary affairs main offices, Lok Sabha Secretariat, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Prime Minister’s office, offices of some MPs and security staff.
  8. The furniture would have facility of smart displays. There will be digital facilities to translate speeches, programmable microphones and recording facilities. Biometrics will also be provided to cast vote easily.
  9. The existing Parliament building would be preserved as a heritage structure.
  10. The new building would be vastu compliant. It would also display cultural diversity. Around 200 artisans from different regions in the country would take part in construction works.
