Former Chief Minister late YSR’s daughter YS Sharmila, who set the ball rolling for her political outfit, expressed concern that women were not being given due recognition and respect in the society in Telangana. She alleged that injustice was done to women after formation of separate Telangana.
She was addressing an Atmeeya Sammelan with women on the occasion of International Women’s Day at her Lotus Pond residence on Monday. She said that women are lauded for their services and sacrifices on Women’s Day but the immediate next day, everything is forgotten.
“Recognition and appreciation for services should be not be a one-off programme. Women need to be respected and recognised for their services every day and everywhere, for every work. It is unfortunate that women are being forced to demand for this recognition,” she said.
She said that someone had asked her the logic behind celebrating Women’s Day even while women were asking for gender equality on one hand.
“Women’s Day needs to be celebrated and their services should be recognised because women have always been suppressed and looked down upon for the last few centuries. Men had never faced such a situation,” she pointed out.
“In this backdrop, women from across the world got together on a common platform to raise their voice for their rights. This unity among women helped in giving due recognition to them,” she added.
