South Indian film actress Shakeela, who donned many glamorous roles in Malayalam film industry, made foray into politics. Her entry into the political corridors was surprising for many and the news became viral on the social media.
She joined the Congress party in Tamil Nadu, ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. She reached Satyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai and received her party membership certificate. Soon, she was given a key role in the human rights wing of the party.
She is likely to kickstart campaigning on behalf of the party in Tamil Nadu very soon. Speaking to the media, she said that she was entering politics to serve the people. “If we need to serve people, we have to be with political parties and I hope that my association with a national party like the Congress will help me in achieving my endeavour,” she said.
She took the film industry by storm with her softcore movies. She had such popularity that producers of mainstream cinema deferred their release dates, if it clashed with Shakeela’s movies. It is said that she outperformed star heroes like Mammootty and Mohanlal at the box office.
She made her debut in the film industry at the age of 18 years with the movie Play Girls in 1995. Since then, she acted in nearly 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Oriya and Kannada.
Recently, her biopic was also released with Richa Chadha playing the lead role. Now, it has to be seen if she would be able to draw the voters towards the Congress just as she drew the young and old viewers with her films.
